Selwyn MP Amy Adams has welcomed the decision by Education Minister Nikki Kaye to bring forward the construction of a planned new primary school for West Halswell.
Halswell West Primary School will be situated on the corner of Richmond Ave and Killarney Ave, near the new residential subdivision of Knights Stream Park, between Prebbleton and Oaklands.
“The Halswell area is growing very rapidly and I am sure that local families will be delighted to learn that the new school will now open in 2019 rather than 2022 as originally scheduled,” said Ms Adams.
Construction of stage one of the new $11 million primary school will start early in 2018.
It will cater for children from years 1 to 8 and will initially have space for 450 students, with the capacity to expand to accept up to 700.
“As the local MP for the area, I am thrilled that the Government is in a position to respond in such a timely manner to ensure that our local school network meets the needs of our growing West Halswell community”, said Ms Adams.
